How to Build a Morning Routine That Actually Sticks

April 24, 2026 6 min read Randy Vlasic

Most people try to build a morning routine the same way. They watch a YouTube video, copy someone else’s schedule, and go hard for about ten days. Then life happens. They miss a morning. Then two. Then the whole thing falls apart and they tell themselves they are just not a morning person.

That is not a discipline problem. That is a design problem.

The routines that stick are not the most impressive ones. They are the ones built around your actual life, not someone else’s highlight reel. Before you add anything to your morning, you need to answer one question honestly: what do I actually need to function at my best? Not what looks good on paper. What do you need.

For me, the non-negotiables are simple. Prayer first. Then I write down three things I am grateful for and three things I am going to accomplish that day. Then I move my body, even if it is just fifteen minutes. That is the foundation. Everything else is optional depending on the day.

Here is what most people get wrong. They try to build a two-hour morning routine before they have even proven they can protect thirty minutes. Start smaller than you think you need to. If you can protect thirty minutes every morning for sixty days straight, you have built something real. Then you can expand it.

The second thing people get wrong is treating every morning the same. Monday morning before a big week looks different from Saturday morning. Build a weekday version and a weekend version. Give yourself permission to have both.

The third thing is the phone. If your phone is the first thing you touch in the morning, you have already handed your morning to someone else. Put it in another room. Buy an alarm clock. The notifications will still be there in an hour. Your morning window will not come back.

Own the first hour. Not because some productivity guru told you to. Because it is the only hour of the day that belongs entirely to you before the world starts pulling in every direction. Guard it like it matters. Because it does.
